Drop-In Services
6th Street Center is a multi-service resource center located conveniently in downtown Chico at 130 W. 6th Street. Services are available by appointment or drop-in basis to youth experiencing or at-risk for homelessness between the ages of 14-24 years of age. Drop-in hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10:30 am-5:30 pm, Wednesday noon to 5:30 pm with additional appointment times available between 9:30 am-10:30 am.
What To Expect
Youth attending 6th Street Center can access shower facilities, computers, use laundry services, and get food. The day begins with a morning coffee and pastry hour sponsored by a local coffee shop. A hot meal is served at 4:30 each day. Youth and staff work together to plan and prepare center meals. Each youth is issued a monthly membership card which they can use to access clothing and hygiene items. Community donations supply the clothing closet and hygiene room which contains essentials such as socks, underwear, deodorant and dental care.
Resources
6th Street case managers work one-on-one with youth to access counseling, employment readiness, educational advocacy, housing opportunities, and public benefits. Whenever possible, services are offered on-site. If a referral is necessary, case managers are able to accompany the young person to help overcome any transportation barriers and provide a supportive connection. 6th Street also has clinical staff on-site to provide ongoing counseling and therapy services.
Activities
Groups, classes, and workshops are offered focusing on the development of independent living skills, youth leadership opportunities and healthy use of leisure time. The weekly activity schedule includes offerings such as art, yoga, and cooking. Music time occurs daily where youth have access to the center piano, keyboard and guitars. A favorite offering is Writing for Donuts, a weekly writing group where youth are encouraged to engage in written expression and journaling. Field trips occur approximately four times per year and have included rafting, rock-climbing, swimming and hiking.
The Little Box Store
6th Street youth have the option of earning TAY Bucks to use at the 6th Street Little Box Store. Supported through community donations, the store contains an array of items from food to games and basic household supplies. Youth earn TAY Bucks by attending appointments, completing goals, and helping out with chores around the center.
